2007 Hudson Vineyard Carneros - SOLD OUT
Another spectacular vintage from the famed Hudson Vineyards, one of the most stunning Carneros properties I've ever seen. Lee Hudson's dedication to excellent grape growing surely shines through in the bottle. The small pinot vineyard known as Block C, is divided into 2 different clones. The Pommard gives the spice, richness, and jammy notes, while the 777 gives the depth and elegance with sweet floral undertones.
This year the 2 clones ripened at almost the same rate- at least close enough for me to pick them at the same time. With an average of 24.8 brix, the perfect little clusters were sorted, destemmed, and gently dumped into an open top tank to begin the cold soak and a natural fermentation. Punching down by hand (and clean feet) occurred 2 -3 times daily until the wine reached dryness. It was then drained into 40% new French oak where it aged for 11 months. The final blend was then racked and bottled with no fining or filtration.
Intense flavors of dark berries, plums, violets, and raspberry jam gain complexity and nuance on the finish where they mingle with a bright acidity and soft, round tannins.
This wine certainly has the backbone to stand up to a nice piece of meat, but pairs beautifully with a multitude of fish and veggie dishes. Yum!
